• If your parent can't safely lift each leg over the tub wall, they need a transfer bench, not a chair.
  • A shower chair suits walk-in showers, or a tub they can step into comfortably.
  • Check the weight capacity, make sure the height adjusts so their feet rest flat, and look for rubber-tipped legs.
  • Measure the tub and the floor space before you buy.

The one question that decides it

Stepping over a tub wall means standing on one leg on a wet surface while lifting the other leg over a barrier that's usually 14 to 16 inches high. If that step already looks shaky, a chair inside the tub doesn't solve the hard part, because they still have to get over the wall to reach it.

A transfer bench straddles the tub wall. Your parent sits down outside the tub, where the floor is dry and flat, then slides across and lifts their legs over while seated.

When a shower chair is the right choice

A shower chair is the simpler, more compact option for a walk-in shower, or for someone who steps into the tub confidently but tires or feels unsteady standing to wash.

What to look for:

  • A backrest and armrests if they need help sitting down and standing up. A backless stool is fine only for someone with good balance.
  • Adjustable leg height, so their feet rest flat on the floor with knees at about a right angle.
  • Rubber non-slip feet and drainage holes in the seat.
  • Weight capacity with a comfortable margin. Most rate between 250 and 400 pounds.

When a transfer bench is the right choice

Choose a bench for anyone who has trouble stepping over the tub wall, uses a walker, or is recovering from a hip or knee procedure.

What to look for:

  • Fit for your tub. Measure the inside width of the tub and the height of the tub wall, and check the bench's specifications against both.
  • Floor space outside the tub. Two legs sit on the bathroom floor, so you need room there.
  • A sliding seat if your parent can't scoot sideways easily. The seat glides across on a track.
  • A way to manage the curtain. Some benches have a cut-out, or you can use a split curtain so water stays inside the tub.

Make either one work better

Seated bathing only works if the water can come to them, so pair either option with a handheld shower head on a long hose.

Add a grab bar at the entry so there's something solid to hold while sitting down and standing up. Our bathroom safety guide covers placement.

A note on fit

If your parent is recovering from surgery or a fall, their physical or occupational therapist can tell you which option and seat height suits them. It's a quick question for them, and it's worth asking.
